Home base

Heating & Air Conditioning in Port Richey, FL

Cowpoke Cooling is based in Port Richey. The canal homes, river streets and US-19 storefronts here are the buildings they know best.

Port Richey is a small Gulf-coast city wrapped around the mouth of the Pithlachascotee River, the Cotee to anyone who lives here. A lot of the housing went up from the 1960s through the 1980s: concrete-block ranches, waterfront homes on dredged canals, and manufactured-home communities, with newer infill mixed in.

That shows up in the equipment. Plenty of homes are on their second or third air conditioner, some still on R-22, often with original attic ductwork that’s been patched more than once. Along US-19, the strip centers, restaurants and bars run rooftop units and walk-in coolers that work hard from April to November.

What we see in Port Richey

  1. 01

    Salt air on outdoor coils

Condensers close to the Gulf corrode faster. Fins flake, coils pit, and capacitors and contactors fail sooner than they would inland.

  2. 02

    Aging R-22 systems

Older systems still running on R-22, where a big leak raises the repair-or-replace question right away.

  3. 03

    Clogged condensate drains

Algae in the PVC drain line backs water into the air handler pan, trips the float switch, and shuts the system off on a hot afternoon.

  4. 04

    Restaurant and bar refrigeration

Walk-ins and reach-ins along US-19 that ice up or run warm, where every hour is product at risk.

Local notes

Good to know in Port Richey.

Storm surge

Low-lying canal neighborhoods have taken surge water in recent hurricanes. Any condenser or air handler that sat in floodwater should be inspected before it’s turned back on.

Why do AC units near the water in Port Richey wear out faster?

Salt air. Condensers near the Gulf and the canals corrode faster than inland units: the aluminum fins break down, copper coils pit, and electrical parts fail sooner.

Rinsing the outdoor coil gently with a garden hose (power off at the disconnect, no pressure washer) and keeping up with maintenance both help. When you replace, ask about coil coatings or equipment built for coastal use.

My AC sat in floodwater after a storm. Can I turn it back on?

Don’t. Leave the power off to any outdoor unit, air handler or furnace that was underwater, and have it inspected first.

Floodwater, especially salt water, can damage electrical components and controls and leave contamination in the ductwork. Restarting it before it’s checked can cause more damage or a safety hazard.
